This is absolutely the first and only episode where we hear anybody refer to Nancy as “darling” (except her parents, of course, mostly her mother). Season 6, Episode 6 – Preacher Takes a Wife
In the Hero Township horse race, Laura and her horse Bunny go head-to-head with Nellie and her new Thoroughbred, which Mrs. Oleson has bought for her, against the wishes of Nels. Laura has to battle all kinds of adversity and needs a pep-talk from her Pa when she begins to feel sorry for herself. However, Nellie does not properly prepare for the race, so the stage is set for a close finish. Nellie has been mistreating Bunny, who was Laura's horse until she sold it to Mr. Oleson (in "Christmas at Plum Creek"). When Nellie falls off the horse and appears to be seriously injured, Mrs. Oleson blames Laura and wants Bunny to be killed, so Laura takes Bunny and hides her. Nellie exploits Laura's guilty feelings, but then Laura makes a discovery which leads to a comeuppance for Nellie, and Bunny becomes Laura's horse again.
As they all sing a hymn, Miss Peel accepts the hand of friendship that Mary offers to her. After Caroline complains about the small size of her kitchen, Charles decides to build an addition onto the house, but after starting the work he has to leave to take a rush delivery to Mankato. The citizens chose to burn down the town instead of giving the land grabber the place in one piece. In the episode “The last farewell,” the citizens of Walnut Grove discovered that a developer had bought the land. The land grabber threatened to evict anybody who doesn’t work for him, and he had the backing of the US army. The show ended with the occupants of Walnut Grove blowing up the town one building at a time.
A season and a half later, in Season 9’s “Times Are Changing,” Royal comes to Walnut Grove with one daughter and no sons. Almanzo says it’s been ten years since he last saw Royal, and Laura implies that she’s never met Royal before. In the scene right after Harriet faints in Church, we see the congregation leaving. Eliza Jane is walking arm-in-arm with Harv. Given the way the small town of Walnut Grove typically is, it’s strange that nobody noticed this and thought it was odd that Eliza Jane suddenly had a beau. At the very least, you’d think that gossipmonger Harriet Oleson would have spread that information around as quickly as possible.
One viewer really hated Nellie.
Even Mary knew how to plow a field at age 14, as she demonstrates in Season 4’s “To Run and Hide”. Claude Earl Jones, who plays Jack Prescott in this episode, appears again in Season 9’s “Home Again, Part One” as a compassionate store owner who drops shoplifting charges against Albert in Burr Oak, Iowa. When Charles puts a lock on the door, Caroline says they never had to do that before. In Season 1’s “Harvest of Friends”, however, Charles gives Caroline a key to their front door, and she specifically mentions the feeling of security that it gives her. Harriet has a record of four fainting spells in this episode, and Nancy has one, her first and only one, in the whole series.
